What is Rotary?

Corn Feed

The Owatonna Rotary Club Early Edition was chartered October 10, 2000. (club ID 54401)  Our sponsoring club was the Owatonna Rotary Club which we call the Noon Club.  Bruce Locklear was the charter year President.

Our club meets at 7 A.M. Tuesdays for breakfast at “The Kitchen” restaurant located in downtown Owatonna. Once a month we must meet elsewhere  because the restaurant has a long term prior commitment.  We have made this the week that we visit a local business or industry so that we can have a better understanding of what they do, who their customers are and how they came to be in Owatonna.  The club really enjoys the visits and it lets the business community know that we exist.

Our club was founded with the intent of becoming visible in the community and being perceived as a club that takes action. Some of our projects are Adopt-A-Highway, where we clean up trash along the east and west sides of I-35 by the Cabela’s Exit.  We raise the funds for the Fireworks display over the 4th of July.  We call this project “Patriot Skies” and it is well supported by the community.  We also send volunteers to read to the elementary students, send volunteers to teach a Junior Achievement program. Support the school in providing funding for a Strive scholarship.  We also have taken a group of kids from Big Brothers/Big Sisters on an afternoon outing.

We send a student from the High School to RYLA and also two students to Whitewater University in Wisconsin for a week long course in international relations.

We teamed up with other Rotary Clubs in Southeastern Minnesota to provide assistance to flood Victims in the Austin area who were hit hard by rain and flooding during the summer of 2004.

We have contributed to the Polio Plus project, helped build wells in Tanzania and playgrounds in Costa Rica.  We also work with the District in contributing to well building in Haiti.

Owatonna has been visited by a Group Study Exchange (GSE) in 2002 from Zambia.  We worked with the Noon Club in hosting the study team members.

For Rotary Year 2005-6 we printed a photo book of our Rotary Year.  To look at it click the History link below.
